Secure Digital (SD) card is designed specifically for the
distribution of copyrighted digital information, including audio, images
and video. Security for the SD card is based on the 4C Content Protection
for Recordable Media (CPRM) standard used widely in the consumer electronics
industry. The security technology built into the SD card complies with all
three levels of Secure Digital Music Initiative (SDMI) security requirements.
Reading and writing (in protected areas) is permitted by the SD card's control
circuitry when appropriate external devices are detected.
The SD card is compact; it is about the size of a postage stamp. The SD
card memory storage is based on the proven flash technology. As a result,
the card is rugged and reliable, because it retains information without
any power, and there is no moving part to break down.
Currently uses for SD cards include: PDAs (e.g. Palm m500 series),
digital audio players, digital camera, digital video camera, Internet
appliances, cellular phones, GPS, set-top boxes, and games.
SD cards are available in capacities of: 16MB, 32MB, 64MB, 128MB, 256MB, 512MB and 1GB.
Now available in 128MB and 256MB, Secure Digital T-Pro Series cards. These cards have write speeds up to 5 times faster (10MB/sec) then standard SD cards.
